I first fell in love with the bat girls while enjoying an afternoon coffee with my dad at Mercury Espresso, where Aminda Wood was showing her work. I fell in love instantly. Perhaps it was because they remind me a little bit of myself; their scarlet tresses remind me of the ones I rocked in high school; their full skirts; quirky hosiery, and pointy boots are all reminiscent of my own style aesthetic, and their barely-there lips look a bit like my own petite features.
Luckily my dad is a firm believer in buying original art (in fact he made me promise to buy one piece a year for my own collection). So, a few weeks later we were back in the east end and popped into Arts Market, where Aminda sells her work, so he could buy me the bat girls as a housewarming present. It was a great chance to meet the lovely Aminda in person and explore more of her art.
I love the whimsical feeling of Aminda’s illustrations and the sense of imagination that each of her images evokes. I hope to take a few more of them home soon and her reasonably priced prints would make beautiful Christmas gifts. Here are a few of my other favourite pieces:
You can check out more of Aminda’s work on her blog. She’s not only an illustrator, she also creates one-of-a-kind jewelry, coffee cuffs, and other unique works. What’s your favourite piece?
