What I Wore: Colour Me Vintage.

IMG_0819Last night was another adventure with the amazing Xandra (what am I going to do when she goes back to America?!) This time it was for an evening of swing dancing with kingsXswing at Drink, Shop & Do. Full details on that in Saturday’s post.

To get into the swing of things (oooh, bad pun!), I put on a few of my favourite pieces, complete with a swishy crinoline. I felt a bit overdressed at work but I have to say, I think these are my favourite outfit photos on the blog so far. And I like the idea of looking a bit glam during my day-to-day. So as a teaser of the night’s events, take a look at what I wore…

IMG_0809drinkshopdo2IMG_0820drinkshopdo1IMG_0818I’m wearing a vintage alphabet headscarf; a 1940s vintage sailor dress; a vintage wool cardigan; a vintage crinoline skirt; tights from Ardene; the Glamtique Roadshoe flats and a vintage locket.

As you can see, my purple locks have been transformed to turquoise – mostly, anyway. The dye didn’t take in a few places so I’ve got some fiddling around and touching up to do. I used Bleach London’s Washed Up Mermaid (great name!) and based on the swatch, I was expecting a much more muted shade. I was a bit shocked at how vibrant it came out, but I’ve got to say, it’s really grown on me and I’m quite smitten with it now.

What do you think?

What I Wore: Saying Good-Bye to Purple

purpleToday was pretty much a perfect Sunday.

I’d been out quite late last night, having drinks with Canadian friends who were in town so I allowed myself the luxury of sleeping in until 10am. This week has been frantic with work and I was really grateful not to be up at the crack of dawn.

I made myself a nice breakfast and ate it in bed with a big mug of tea and a side of Moon Over Soho. Finally I forced myself to get out of bed and into the shower so that I could head out on the day’s adventures.

These included a stroll through the Columbia Road flower market; a £2 pot of hot pink roses; picking up supplies for a new DIY project; a stroll through the Brick Lane Sunday market (madness as usual) with the lovely Xandra; poking in bookstores and antique shops; a mug of hot chocolate in my favourite coffee shop; a little photo shoot in front of some colourful graffiti and a lovely dinner at one of the Brick Lane curry houses.

I’ve come full circle, as I’m back in bed typing this post. I’m utterly exhausted and have giant blisters on my feet, but it was totally worth it for such a lovely day. Now I’m looking forward to another cup of tea and curling up with more of PC Grant’s magical mysteries.

But first, here’s a peek at what I wore for today’s adventures…

purple4purple2 purple3 purple5Action shot!

I’m wearing a secondhand cardigan (label: Talula); a sparkly pencil skirt that I made; Primark tights; Glamtique Roadshoe flats and one of my handmade bullet casing necklaces.

After a full year with purple hair (that might be a record for me!), I’ve decided it’s time for a change. I payed homage to the fading shades of my violet locks with the dark purple on my sweater and a lipstick that matches the more faded, mauve-y bits (in retrospect, I think it makes me look a bit washed out).

I picked up everything I need to do the colour change at home yesterday and was hoping I could do it tonight, but time has gotten away from me. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to get it done tomorrow and then I can debut the new hue later in the week. Check out my Twitter feed and you’ll be able to guess what I’m going for.

What adventures did you get up to this weekend? Is anyone else planning a big colour change?

What I Wore // The Witching Hour

the-witching-hour.jpgEarlier this week I met up with the lovely Xandra for a stroll through Highgate Cemetery. It was the perfect setting for Halloween-y outfit photos and, as the resting place of Karl Marx and George Eliot, I’ve had it on my list of London haunts to visit. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for our visit. A dark, cloudy sky provided ominous mood lighting as we traipsed across the fallen leaves and through meandering paths. The cemetery itself is incredibly beautiful. It’s crowded and overgrown, with layers of history overlapping one another in a way that I found absolutely enchanting.  We happened upon a few pleasant surprises as well – like finding Douglas Adams’s grave, where fans have filled a bowl with pens in tribute to the prolific wordsmith.

For this outfit, I wanted to channel my inner witch. I tried to achieve this by layering a black slip with a lace maxi skirt. Knotting cardigans to create a cropped look is my new favourite trick and this helped maintain the silhouette I wanted. A few mystical adornments, like a large crystal ring and glass beads from the 1950s, pulled it all together. When Xandra commented that I was looking sorceress-y, I knew I’d gotten it right. What do you think?

the-witching-hour2DSC_0083highgate-cemeteryDSC_0107IMG_0477the-witching-hour3I’m wearing a 1950s vintage slip, a 1970s vintage lace maxi skirt, a thrifted cardigan (Banana Republic), vintage beads, a thrifted glitter belt, and vintage suede shoes.

Highgate Cemetery somehow managed to be charming and spooky all at the time. Plus, our adventure brought up lots of questions about the people buried there. An adventure that calls for further research is a good one in my books. The grounds are quite large and we only had a chance to visit the East Cemetery, so I hope to make another visit to walk through the other side.

What do you think about spending time in cemeteries – fascinating or too creepy?

What I Wore // Hire me, s’il vous plaît

vintage-outfit-2It’s true what they say – this city is expensive. I’ve decided to look for another job to supplement my writing income. I think it will be nice to be a part of a team again and working somewhere other than on my laptop will definitely help me feel more connected to the city. So today I put on a few of my favourite vintage pieces and handed out a few CVs.

My roommate Kari and I were planning to go shopping for our Halloween costumes in Camden afterwards but some closures on the tube got in our way. Instead we opted for brunch in Shoreditch and a gander through the Brick Lane Sunday markets.

I couldn’t resist posing in front of this giant ‘S’ and I’m glad I’d did. I’d planned to do a whole outfit shoot, but it ended up pouring rain. I really love how the outfit came together, so I’m glad Kari was able to get a few shots before I was sopping wet.

vintage-outfit-1I’m wearing a 1950s vintage cardigan, a (hand-me-down) Jean Paul Gaultier shirt, a vintage locket, a 1950s vintage circle skirt, tights from Primark, and vintage shoes.

It was pretty funny – I got myself all dolled up and even tried to do a bit of a beehive with my hair but it wasn’t until late afternoon that I realized I hadn’t put a lick of eye makeup on. Seeing the photos now, it makes my look seem a bit incomplete. But I guess that just gives me a good reason to wear it again. ;)

What have you been up to this weekend? I’d love to hear!

What I Wore for a Blogger Date (black on black on black on black)

dsc_0304

Yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Xandra of Fashionably Light (remember her awesome guest post?) She recommended we check out Wild Food Cafe, a vegetarian and raw food restaurant I’d hoped to visit last time I was in London but hadn’t had a chance to, so I was very happy to agree.

We each ordered different versions of the raw pizza and I was blown away by how flavourful and interesting it was. But even better than the food, was instantly feeling at ease and having a wonderful conversation with someone I’d only just met. We chatted about the theatre, blogging, our personal bucket lists, the cities we love, our thoughts on style and minimalism, magic, and so much more.

The great thing about meeting up with a fellow blogger is that they don’t blink an eye when you take out your camera to snap a photo of your meal or ask them to take a few shots of your outfit. So, after lunch we stepped outside for a quick photo shoot against a colourful wall in Neal’s Yard. Take a look…

dsc_0300dsc_0303dsc_0292dsc_0313sarahI’m wearing a vintage lace skater dress, a vintage sequinned sweater, tights from Primark, knee socks from Ardene, vintage suede shoes, and the bullet casing necklaces I made.

And in case you’re curious, here’s a peek at what I had to eat…raw-pizzaPumpkin crust with roasted red pepper marinara, olive cheese, avocado, arugula, pesto, and heart of palm. So delicious! I’m already dreaming up ways to recreate it at home.

After taking our photos (and getting some curious looks from passersby), we walked around the corner to take a gander at the mystical offerings at The Astrology Shop. I picked up a salt crystal tea light holder that I decided needed to live on my desk.

I’m gutted that Xandra will be heading back to the States in a couple of months, but I’m so glad we’ll get to know each other while we’re both living in the same city. We’re already planning some really fun adventures, so stay tuned…
